Ive been following Matts blog for several months now, and if youre one of his regular readers you might have seen me occasionally comment under the name Some Crazy Sophomore or Some Crazy Rising Junior. I met Matt through mutual friends and frequently drop into his office for advice and chat about the UA (see fourth paragraph), of which he was President back in the day. :) First, a trivia question: the name of this blog, A Land of Dreams and Fire, is yoinked from a quote in a fantasy novel can anyone name the book and/or the author? A little bit about me, in terms of academics. Im class of 07, so Im a rising junior. Im Course 9 (Brain Cognitive Sciences), with dabblings (which may turn into something more official like minors, or may remain dabblings) in 7 (Biology), 6 (Electrical Engineering Computer Science) and 17 (Political Science), and probably more fields in the future. Ive also taken more 18 (Math) classes than I need for my major, but saying that I dabble in the field is an exaggeration. Right now, I want to get a BME minor. Im not a pre-med (I always get asked that when people find out my major). Id like to go to grad school, but right now Im not sure in exactly what field Im thinking about systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience or biology, and biological engineering, among others. A little bit about me, in general. I live on 5th East, my wonderful hall in the dorm of East Campus. Im the Vice-President of the Undergraduate Association, or UA, MITs undergrad-population-wide student government, and before that I was an East Campus senator in the UA. Im also part of Alpha Phi Omega (a national co-ed service fraternity), the MIT Student Juggling Club, and MIT Pro-Choice, and am a chapter coordinator for How to Get Around MIT, which those of you who are incoming frosh will receive when you arrive on campus. I love to read, but my favorite authors and books change on a regular basis. I love music, and my favorite bands are R.E.M and Pearl Jam, but at the moment Im listening to How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb by U2. I ran cross-country in high school, and did crew as a freshman here, but dont play a sport right now. I believe that I am up for this as this too is my strengths, I am an Assistant Manager of a restaurant therefore occasionally I check the Sales record for any discrepancies. Therefore I have some experience on such matters. Problem Solving Ability: I am actually very good in solving problems and am a quick learner. In my current job, I face problems which might be related to cash shortage or problem of absent employee problem, Complaints about the quality of food or bad presentation day in and day out. I feel that I deal with these problems effectively. An accounting profile job is challenging but I think I can handle any situation that comes before me. Hardworking: Most of my co-workers and even my boss feel that I am hard working and honest. I feel that if in any field a person is honest towards his work than he will succeed no matter where he works. Now the areas where I think I can improve and develop more are given below: Communication Skills: As I have stated earlier my communications skill is good. I feel there is still scope for improvement. In an accountant job profile, there will be situations where the Accountant needs to communicate with the clients or external party or suppliers even. There is still lack of confidence in me which I feel I can improve on as confidence is also an important factor of smooth communication. Expertise Area: I have never worked for any accounting job profiles therefore it is natural that I might lack in certain areas which a trained or experienced person might not lack. This will come with experience and I think I will improve on this as well. Step 3: SMART Action Plan The third step involves developing and implementing an action plan with SMART technique. The analysis is given below: 1. Specific I need improvement in my Communication skills. I need more confidence when I am handling any problem which can be solved by effective communication skills. 2. Measureable Acquiring knowledge of the current accounting norms and practices as well as dealing with a problem more confidently. Experience in Accounts can be achieved through maintaining and checking books of accounts which I will be doing for my restaurant in mean time. 3. Attainable I will be acquiring knowledge of Standards of Accounting by the end of this month and will be trying for my Masters degree in distance education system which will be available in a years time. This degree will definitely help me to get a better post like team head or supervisor in an accounting firm. 4. Relevant My goals of becoming an Accountant and establishing myself will be impacted by my level of skill in the field which I think I will have after my Masters completion. 5.Time bound I will be achieving my goals within five years of time interval including my goals of establishing myself in life, having my own house. My aim will be to head a Accounting team in a five years time. Gaps between Self Assessment and Personal Development Plan These are the gaps in my plan where I believe I can improve. The following are given below: Firstly I have already pointed out that my communication skills need improvement. The job profile which I have in mind will be requiring excellent communication skills. Secondly I have also pointed out that I do not currently possess the expertise which is necessary for an accountant but I believe as per my personal development plan I can overcome this gap. Lastly I feel there will be a lot of competition for this job profile. In modern era it is quite a popular job profile. Therefore it is not going to be easy getting my desired profile Plan for Achieving My Goals My goals are set which are to establish myself in life, earn a good salary, have my own house, and lead an Accounting team in a well reputed firm. In order to achieve these I will follow the follow steps: I have knowledge that nowadays Accountants have moved from traditional methods of accounting to Modern practices which uses Computer programs like Tally, Excel. I think taking classes from Youtube will be helpful for learning tally or excel. I feel if I possess knowledge of such software then it will give me a tactical edge. Another way of getting experience is by doing a part time job for low salary in an Accounting firm as an intern. This will elevate my confidence and help me in my future goals. As per Maslows Need Theory, this measure will addresses my Esteem needs and provide me confidence and even recognition ( Kaur 2013). My life will be hectic if I follow the above part time job plan but its worth it, the key is to have a ideal work-life balance keeping my honesty towards my work.
